NGT Orders Investigation Into Illegal Groundwater Extraction by Noida Realty Firms

Real Estate, NOIDA NEWS, LATEST NEWS,

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Uttar Pradesh Ground Water Department to investigate allegations of illegal groundwater extraction by several real estate developers, industries, and other entities operating in Noida and Greater Noida. The move comes after concerns were raised regarding unauthorized groundwater usage at multiple construction sites across the region.

The case was brought before the tribunal through a petition filed by environmental activist Vikrant Tongad. The petition highlighted allegations of unauthorized dewatering activities and the use of illegally operated borewells at various project sites. According to the complaint, groundwater was allegedly being extracted without the required permissions, raising concerns about environmental sustainability and the depletion of water resources in the region.

The petition specifically mentioned projects located in Noida sectors 145, 153, 94, and 150. It also included construction activities in Techzone-II and parts of the Yamuna Expressway region. These areas have witnessed significant real estate development in recent years, making groundwater management an important concern for both authorities and local residents.

Taking note of the allegations, the NGT instructed the Uttar Pradesh Ground Water Department to conduct site inspections and verify the claims. The department has been asked to identify any illegally operating tube wells or borewells and assess whether groundwater extraction is being carried out in violation of existing regulations. If any violations are found during the investigation, authorities have been directed to take appropriate remedial and punitive action in accordance with the law.

The tribunal has also set a timeline of three months for the completion of the investigation. Officials are expected to submit their findings after conducting ground-level verification and reviewing the compliance status of the concerned entities.

Impact on the Real Estate Sector

The NGT’s directive is likely to increase regulatory scrutiny on ongoing and upcoming real estate projects in Noida and Greater Noida. Developers may be required to strengthen compliance with groundwater extraction norms, environmental clearances, and water conservation measures. While stricter monitoring could increase operational responsibilities for builders, it may also encourage sustainable development practices and responsible resource management. In the long term, improved environmental compliance can help create a more transparent and sustainable real estate market in the region.
